[Vagabond] Nuit polaire / Polar night

Inglefieldbukta, 24 octobre 2004,

Vagabond a trouvé son havre d'hivernage le 9 octobre dernier, juste un
an après la fin de sa navigation circumpolaire. Depuis quelques jours,
la banquise semble se former plus solidement. Bientôt nous pourrons
aller et venir librement autour du bateau, sans oublier de prendre garde
aux ours polaires qui fréquentent tous les jours la baie d'Inglefield,
et le reste de la côte Est du Spitsberg. Jin et Frost, nos deux chiens
groenlandais, sont là pour donner l'alerte si l'un d'eux devenait trop
curieux, et pour nous aider à l'éloigner si besoin !

Certaines observations scientifiques ont commencé, afin d'étudier la
formation de la banquise. Ici le soleil se couchera le 28 octobre (par
chance c'est aussi le jour de la pleine lune, quoiqu'elle sera masquée
quelques heures puisqu'il y aura une éclipse !), pour ne se lever à
nouveau que le 14 février. Vous pouvez partager cette longue nuit
polaire avec France et moi, en lisant notre journal de bord en ligne sur
le site de Vagabond. Les premiers scientifiques viendront nous rejoindre
à partir de février, lorsque le jour sera revenu. L'hivernage se
terminera à la débâcle, quand nous pourrons naviguer à nouveau,
probablement en juin...

d'excellentes conditions.

Vagabond found her wintering location on 9th October, only one year
after finishing her circumpolar navigation. Since few days, sea ice is
getting a little thicker. Soon it will be easier to go around the boat,
without forgetting the polar bears, visiting daily Inglefield Bay, as
well as most of the East coast of Spitsbergen. Jin and Frost, our two
Greenlandic dogs, are here to tell us if one would become too curious,
and to help us keeping him away if necessary!

Some scientific observations started already, to study how sea ice is
forming. Here the last sunset will be on 28th October (there will be a
full moon the same day, but also an eclipse for few hours!), and the
next sunrise will be on 14th February. You can share this long polar
night with France and me by reading our logbook online Vagabond's
website. The first scientific teams will join us after February, when
daylight will be back. Wintering will end with the sea ice breaking up,
when we will be able to sail again, probably in June...
