[vagabond] Dix ans / Ten years

Ours, belougas, narvals, phoques étaient nombreux au rendez-vous,
mi-juillet, lorsque les glaces ont libéré Vagabond. En quittant notre
petite baie d'Inglefield, les souvenirs se bousculaient : Zagrey mangé
par un ours, la dérive soudaine en famille sur une plaque de banquise,
la coque percée par la glace, le séisme dans la nuit polaire, la
motoneige plantée dans une rivière glaciaire, les centaines de relevés
hydrographiques, les 757 observations d'ours blancs, les premiers pas de
Léonie, les tempêtes et les aurores boréales... Le cinquième hivernage
au Spitsberg s'est achevé, ainsi que notre mission pour Damocles, projet
européen chargé d'étudier la banquise.

Suite au recul des glaces, les routes maritimes arctiques qui relient
les océans Atlantique et Pacifique, attirent de plus en plus les
navigateurs. Via le passage du Nord-Ouest, durant l'été 2009, une
dizaine de bateaux de plaisance et deux importants navires de croisières
sont ainsi passés d'un océan à l'autre. Via le passage du Nord-Est, le
transit de deux cargos a été largement médiatisé : Beluga Shipping
serait la première société de transport maritime occidentale à
emprunter cette voie mythique. Ces navires ont pu croiser quatre bateaux
de plaisance qui tentaient également de franchir le passage. L'un d'eux
a fait demi-tour, inquiété par les glaces, tandis que deux voiliers
scandinaves précédaient de quelques semaines Le Manguier, l'ancien
remorqueur à bord duquel France, Léonie et moi avions embarqué. De
Tromsø au détroit de Béring, ce fût passionnant de refaire ce périple
(sept ans après le passage de Vagabond), cette fois en tant qu'artiste
et pilote-photographe, et en famille ! Là où les ours blancs côtoient
l'or noir.

Depuis juillet dernier, Vagabond nous attend au mouillage à Liland, non
loin des îles Lofoten. En mars 2010 il atteindra la Bretagne pour
quelques travaux nécessaires après cinq années au Spitsberg. En avril,
notre petite famille constituera l'équipage d'Ecotroll, pour un périple
expérimental : Lyon - Groenland - La Rochelle, avec un bateau à moteur
hauturier des plus écologique ! Forts de cette expérience, nous
achèverons la mise au point de Vagabond pour son prochain départ vers
l'Arctique, prévu au printemps 2011 avec les Robinsons des Glaces. En
attendant, vous pouvez nous retrouver lors de nos prochaines
interventions, revoir nos films, commander une aquarelle à France...
Hier, nous fêtions l'acquisition de Vagabond, il y a dix ans ! Un grand
merci à vous tous qui avez contribué à cette première décennie de
vagabondages arctiques.

Polar bears, belugas, narwhals, seals were many when, mid July, ice
broke up and released Vagabond. We left our little Inglefield Bay, our
heads were buzzing with memories: Zagrey eaten by a polar bear,
unexpected pack ice drifting session with the family, holes made by ice
in the hull, earthquake during polar night, snowmobile stuck in frozen
river, hundreds of hydrographical measurements, 757 observations of
polar bears, first steps of Léonie, storms and northern lights... The
fifth winter in Spitsbergen was finished, as well as our task for
Damocles, European project for pack ice studies.

With the sea ice retreat, Arctic sea routes linking Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans are attracting more and more sailors. Through the Northwest
Passage, during summer 2009, about ten pleasure boats and two cruise
ships went from one ocean to the other. Through the North-East Passage,
transit of two cargo ships was a lot in the media: Beluga Shipping would
be the first western company to use the mythical seaway. These ships
could meet four pleasure boats also trying to go through the passage.
One of them turned back, worried with drifting ice. Then two
Scandinavian sailboats reached Bering Strait few weeks before Le
Manguier: France, Léonie and I were on board this former tug boat. From
Tromsø to Bering Strait, it was exciting to make again this trip (seven
years after Vagabond's passage), this time as artist and
icepilot-photographer, and with the family! Where white bears are mixed
with black gold.

Since last July, Vagabond is waiting for us at anchor at Liland, not far
from Lofoten Islands. In March 2010, she will be back in Brittany for
some necessary work after five years in Spitsbergen. In April, our
little family will be Ecotroll's crew, for an experimental journey: Lyon
- Greenland - La Rochelle, with a motorboat as ecological as possible!
With a wealth of experience behind us, we will prepare Vagabond for her
next departure towards the Arctic, planned for spring 2011 with the Ice
Robinsons. Before that, you can meet us at one of our next
interventions, watch again our films, order France a watercolour...
Yesterday, we celebrated the acquisition of Vagabond, ten years ago! A
great thank you to all of you that have supported this first decade of
Arctic wanderings.
