Marina et Mark s'installent peu à peu à Inglefielbukta. Avec les 5 chiens et un ours chaque jour en moyenne, l'endroit est fréquenté, presque un petit village ! Les prévisions météo pour ce soir et demain matin annoncent beaucoup de vent, mais amélioration ensuite. La glace entre et sort de la petite baie, les températures sont assez basses.

So Marina and Mark are settling down in Inglefieldbukta. With the five dogs and about a polar bear everyday, it is very crowded, almost a small settlement. The forecast for tonight and the morning is quite windy, but better weather after. The ice in the bay comes and goes, the water temperature is low enough.

En raison du mauvais temps, l'hélico a du faire demi-tour dimanche matin, la glace se formait sur l'appareil. Hier les conditions étaient meilleures, et le Dauphin d'Airlift s'est posé à côté des chiens, dérangeant alors un ours en train de manger un phoque depuis quelques heures. Le temps de rejoindre la berge avec nos sacs, en tirant l'annexe à travers un brash compact (nombreux débris de glace), il était temps de partir, les pilotes ne souhaitant pas voir l'ours s'approcher de l'hélico. Petit pincement au cœur pour France et moi, en quittant Vagabond, vol superbe et rapide vers Longyearbyen, où nous avons pu croiser Marina. Elle rejoindra Mark, Vagabond et les 5 chiens dans 1 ou 2 jours. En attendant, l'ours doit être de retour pour finir son phoque ! Quand à nous, après une escale à Oslo, nous voilà déjà en France, surpris par la douceur du temps, les arbres, la foule... oubliés depuis l'été 2004.

Because of bad weather (icing), the helicopter had to turn back on Sunday morning. Yesterday, conditions were better, and the Dauphin from Airlift landed close to the dogs, scaring away a polar bear who has been eating a seal for the last few hours. We went across heavy brash ice with the dinghy, carrying our bags to shore, then it was time to take off, the pilots didn't want the polar bear to approach the helicopter. Strange feeling for France and me when leaving Vagabond, great and quick flight to Longyearbyen, where we met briefly Marina. She will join Mark, Vagabond, and the 5 dogs within 1 or 2 days. At the moment, the polar bear is probably back, finishing his seal! On our side, after a stop in Oslo, we are already in France, surprised with the warm weather, the trees, the crowd... forgotten since summer 2004.

Vagabond est prêt pour l'hiver, bien maintenu dans son abri par l'ancre et plusieurs amarres à terre. Nos 5 joyeux compagnons sont partis hier pour Svea, zone habitée la plus proche qu'ils devraient rejoindre à pied en 3 jours. Mark, France et moi les avons accompagné jusqu'au pied du glacier, où les restes d'un phoque que venait de dévorer un ours ont fait le bonheur de nos 3 chiens. C'est alors que 5 ou 6 belougas sont passés tranquillement à quelques mètres de nous, devant le front du glacier. Magnifique.
L'hélico est attendu ce matin avec les 2 chiens de Marina et Mark, leurs niches, et un peu d'équipement. France et moi quitterons alors Vagabond, confié à Mark et aux 5 chiens. Marina les rejoindra dans quelques jours, profitant d'un autre vol hélico.
Après 15 mois d'absence, nous sommes ravis de rentrer en France pour quelques semaines, de retrouver nos proches et de participer au Festival du Film d'Aventure de Dijon dans 3 jours !

Vagabond is ready for the winter, well anchored in her shelter also with ropes to shore. Our 5 nice friends left yesterday to Svea, the closest inhabited place, which they should reach on foot within 3 days. Mark, France and I walked with them to the glacier, where some left over from a seal, recently eaten by a polar bear, made our 3 dogs really happy. Then we could watch 5 or 6 belugas passing slowly few meters from us, near the glacier front. Wonderful.
The helicopter is expected this morning with the 2 dogs of Marina and Mark, their dog houses, and some equipment. France and I will leave Vagabond, then given to Mark and the 5 dogs. Marina will come few days later, having a lift with another helicopter flight.
After 15 months away from France, we are happy to come back for few weeks, to see our families and friends, and to take part to the Adventure Film Festival in Dijon in 3 days!

Les chiens, installés sur la berge depuis notre arrivée, nous ont réveillé ce matin, en aboyant après un ours qui s'approchait un peu trop. Nous savons ainsi que notre nouveau compagnon, Ymiak, est efficace pour prévenir de la présence d'un ours. France et moi achevons maintenant de préparer Vagabond pour l'hiver, d'installer la station météo, et de passer les consignes à Mark. Pendant ce temps, les 4 jeunes guides en formation parcours les environs avec leur instructeur Erik, et préparent leur retour à pied vers une région plus habitée.
Nous avons atteint la côte Est du Spitsberg dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi, illuminée par de splendides aurores boréales. La mer s'est peu à peu calmée, nous permettant de faire quelques relevés hydrographiques, et d'observer un orque avant d'entrer dans la baie d'Inglefield. Un ours nous attendait sur la plage enneigée, comme l'année passée lorsque nous avons découvert cette jolie petite baie bien protégée, où Vagabond s'apprête à passer un deuxième hiver.

The dogs, onshore since we arrived, woke us up this morning, barking after a polar bear who was approaching a bit too much. So we know that our new companion, Ymiak, is efficient to alert about polar bear. France and I are now finishing preparing Vagabond for the winter, setting up the weather station, and explaining everything to Mark. In the mean time, the 4 young guides on training are walking around with their instructor Erik, and preparing their trip back on foot to a more inhabited place.
We reached the East coast of Spitsbergen during Sunday to Monday night, looking at very nice northern lights. The sea became better and better, allowing us to do some sea profiles with the CTD, and to watch a killer whale before entering Inglefield's bay. A polar bear was waiting for us on the snowy beach, like last year when we discovered this very nice and protected bay, where Vagabond is about to spend a second winter.

8 personnes et 3 chiens à bord de Vagabond, en escale dans une petite baie au sud ouest du Spitsberg. En attendant des vents plus favorables pour contourner le cap sud, les échanges vont bon train à bord : avec Mark, qui remplacera France et moi pendant notre retour en France, avec Erik, guide au Svalbard (trekking, ski, motoneige), et avec ses 4 jeunes guides en formation, Jeppe, Ingebjorg, Vera et Kristin.

8 people and 3 dogs on board Vagabond, at anchor in a small bay south west of Spitsbergen. While waiting for better winds to sail around south cape, life is nice on board : with Mark, who will replace France and me when we will be in France, with Erik, guide in Svalbard (trekking, ski, snowmobile), and with his 4 young guides on training, Jeppe, Ingebjorg, Vera and Kristin.
