Hier midi, tandis qu'un léger crépuscule offrait une faible visibilité sur les alentours, un jeune ours déboulait à vive allure ! Il a rendu visite aux chiens, est revenu vers Vagabond, puis de nouveau près des niches, pour enfin poursuivre son chemin. Mais pas de trace de sa mère, alors qu'il semblait bien jeune pour être déjà seul; il aurait du la suivre jusqu'à l'âge de 2 ans et demi... Dans la pénombre, lors des mesures d'épaisseurs de banquise, c'est en général Zagrey qui m'accompagne : s'il n'aime pas tirer un traîneau, il annonce efficacement la présence d'un rôdeur.

Yesterday noon, while a little twilight was giving us some visibility around, a young bear turned up quickly! He visited the dogs, came back to Vagabond, then again near the dog houses, and finally went on. But no sign of his mother, although he was quite young to be alone; he should have followed her until age of 2,5 years old... In the dark, when measuring ice thickness, I usually go with Zagrey: if he doesn't like to pull a sledge, he is good to tell when a prowler is nearby.

Mon, 19 Jan 2009, Reprise des sondages météo

Le nouveau ballon, acheminé jusqu'à Longyearbyen par l'équipe d'Edolone le mois dernier, est arrivé avec nous, en motoneige, le 10 janvier. Après quelques jours de préparation, gonflé d'hélium, il a enfin pris son premier envol. Quelle étrange vision que de le voir disparaître dans la nuit ! Seules les petites led rouges des capteurs météo sont visibles sans la lampe frontale. Sous la tente, à la lumière de la lampe à pétrole, il m'a fallu réchauffer le récepteur radio au sèche-cheveux, pour pouvoir récupérer les précieuses données, en temps réel. -23°C et vent nul au sol, -13°C et 40km/h de vent à 1200 m d'altitude...

The new balloon, conveyed to Longyearbyen by Edolone's crew last month, arrived with us, by snowmobile, on 10th January. At least, after few days preparation, inflated with helium, he could take off for the first flight. What an amazing view to see it disappearing in the night! Only the red leds from the weather sensors are visibles without the head lamp. Under the tent, by the oil lamp light, I had to use the hair drier to warm up the radio receiver, to get the valuable data, in real time. -23°C and no wind on the ground, -13°C and 40 km/h of wind at 1200 meters altitude...

Thu, 15 Jan 2009, Petites habitudes

Casser la glace, entretenir le poêle, nourrir les chiens, effectuer un relevé météo, faire tourner le générateur pendant deux heures... c'est naturellement que nous avons repris nos routines quotidiennes. J'avais hâte d'être de retour à bord, et ce fût un régal de retrouver Vagabond si bien entretenu. Par chance, pendant 3 jours, le clair de lune et les aurores boréales nous ont offert un beau festival, sur notre banquise préférée. Pour le moment, avec sa petite lampe frontale, Léonie aime surtout rendre visite aux chiens, qui veillent sur notre petit campement.

Breaking ice, keeping the stove, feeding the dogs, doing the weather report, running the generator for two hours... naturally we went on with our daily routines. I was looking forward to be back on board, and it was really great to find Vagabond kept in so good condition. Luckily, for 3 days, moon and northern lights were offering us a beautiful festival, on our best pack ice. For now, with her little head lamp, Léonie is above all happy visiting the dogs, looking after our small camp.

Thu, 15 Jan 2009, Retour à la maison...

"C’est avec beaucoup d’émotion que nous avons vu les phares s’approcher du fond de la baie sous la lumière d’une pleine lune magnifique. Nous n’avions vu personne depuis trois mois et cela a été étonnant d’accueillir six personnes à bord. Ce fût un plaisir de voir le bonheur de Léonie retrouvant sa « maison bateau » et de partager un repas avec tant de choses à raconter. Après une courte nuit, l’heure est alors venue de laisser France et Eric seuls à leur tour dans cet endroit merveilleux. Trois guides nous ont conduit en motoneige durant 4 heures à travers les vallées enneigées et les glaciers avec une température de -35°C, les lumières de Longyearbyen ont donc été les bienvenues ! Nous avons quitté Vagabond et nos amis les chiens avec des images et des émotions inoubliables. Avant de revenir en France, nous avons la chance de rester une semaine au Svalbard, accueillis chez Anton et Priitta. Nous les aidons à prendre soin de leurs cinqua nte chiens de traîneau. Quel plaisir de conduire un attelage ! Mille mercis à Eric et France de nous avoir donné la chance de vivre cette expérience extraordinaire à bord de Vagabond, et ils savent qu’en cas de besoin, cela ne nous poserait aucun problème de revenir à bord…" Amélie, Hervé et Nael

"Back home... This is with a strong emotion that we have seen the headlights coming closer from the back of the bay with the light of a beautiful full moon. We hadn’t seen people for three months and it was amazing to welcome six people on-board. It was a pleasure to see the Léonie’s happiness finding again her « home boat » and to share a meal with so much things to tell about. After a short night, it was time to leave France and Eric alone to their turn in this wonderful place. Three guides on snowmobiles have driven us during 4 hours through the snow-capped valleys and glaciers with a temperature of -35°C, so the lights of Longyearbyen have been welcome! We have left Vagabond and our friends the dogs with some unforgettable pictures and emotions. Before our return in France we are lucky to stay for one week in Svalbard, living at Anton and Priitta’s home. We are helping them to take care of their fifty sledge dogs. How great it is to drive a dog team! We than k Eric and France who gave us the opportunity to live this extraordinary experience on board Vagabond and they know that if they need, it would be no problem for us to go back on-board…" Amélie, Hervé et Nael.

Sun, 11 Jan 2009, Changement d'équipe

Malgré le froid (-33°C) et les 4 heures de motoneige, pour rejoindre Vagabond, Léonie (2 ans) était soudain très excitée de retrouver son bateau et les chiens ! Et Nael (5 ans) était ravi de la faire rire en lui mimant toutes sortes d'histoires, après 3 mois passés à bord... Le "copain" est reparti aujourd'hui avec ses parents, Amélie et Hervé, sous une magnifique pleine lune, escortés par nos 3 amis guides, Erik, Sveinung et Tommy.

Despite the cold (-33°C) and the 4 hours by snowmobile, to go to Vagabond, Léonie (2 years old) was suddenly very exciter to find her boat and the dogs! And Nael (5 years old) was very happy to make her laugh by telling stories, after 3 months on board... The "pal" left today with his parents, Amélie and Hervé, under a great full moon, escorted by our 3 friends guides, Erik, Sveinenung and Tommy.

Thu, 08 Jan 2009, Chaud - Froid

Pendant qu'Hervé tente de dépanner le poêle de Vagabond, France, Léonie et moi sommes en transit à Oslo, avec les pièces de rechange nécessaire. En attendant notre arrivée, la petite famille qui nous remplace à bord depuis bientôt 3 mois, prend soin des autres systèmes de chauffage puisqu'il fait -32°C à l'extérieur ! Eric

While Hervé is trying to fix Vagabond's stove, France, Léonie and I are in transit in Oslo, with the needed spare parts. Waiting for us to come back, the little family replacing us since 10th October, is taking care of the other heating systems, it's -32°C outside! Eric
