Sun, 26 Sep 2010, Un trimaran autour de l'Arctique

Tandis que France, Léonie et Aurore participaient à la promotion d'Ecotroll au Grand Pavois (salon nautique de La Rochelle), la semaine dernière, j'étais à bord du trimaran Northern Passage, dans l'Arctique canadien. Sollicité par Børge Ousland quelques jours auparavant, j'ai renforcé l'équipage du voilier norvégien pour l'un des tronçons les plus captivant de son périple : de Cambridge Bay à Pond Inlet, le coeur du passage du Nord-Ouest (voir l'album) ! Trygve est ensuite venu me remplacer à Pond Inlet pour la traversée de l'Atlantique, ils sont donc toujours quatre à bord du trimaran qui pourrait bientôt devenir le premier voilier à boucler le tour de l'Arctique en une seule saison (blog). A moins que les russes sur Peter 1er, lancés dans le même défi, rattrapent les norvégiens ! Il avait fallu 17 mois à Vagabond pour enchaîner les deux passages (2002-2003)... Quel contraste de découvrir cette année un paysage presque sans glace, là où nous avions lutté pendant des jours pour éviter l'hivernage. La performance du trimaran norvégien va permettre d'attirer davantage l'attention sur la disparition des glaces pluriannuelles, ce qui ne signifie pas que la navigation est sans risque dans l'Arctique : un navire de croisière et un tanker se sont échoués cet été dans l'archipel canadien, en raison de l'imprécision des cartes (ils viennent tout juste de reprendre la mer). Au recul des glaces s'ajoute la production imminente de pétrole au Groenland, qui va inévitablement générer une augmentation du trafic maritime dans cette partie de l'Arctique. C'est pour mieux observer et témoigner de tous ces bouleversements que Vagabond repartira de Brest dans sept mois, pour un nouveau long séjour polaire, en soutien à la communauté scientifique. While France, Léonie and Aurore were promoting Ecotroll at Grand Pavois (boat show in La Rochelle), last week, I was on board the trimaran Northern Passage, in Canadian Arctic. Few days before, Børge Ousland called me to reinforce the crew of the Norwegian sail boat for one of the most exciting part of her journey: from Cambridge Bay to Pond Inlet, the heart of the North-West passage (look at the pictures)! Then Trygve replaced me in Pond Inlet to cross the Atlantic, so they are still four on board the trimaran, who could become soon the first yacht to sail around the Arctic in a single season (blog). Unless the Russians on board Peter 1st manage to catch up with Norwegians! It took us 17 months, on board Vagabond, to sail both passages (2002-2003)... What a difference to sail this year through a landscape with almost no ice, where we struggled for days to avoid wintering. The Norwegian trimaran's performance will allow more focus on the disappearing multiyear ice, which doesn't mean that navigation is safe in the Arctic: a cruise ship and a tanker went aground last summer in Canadian archipelago, because of poor charts (both boats are just back sailing). To the pack ice retreat, we need to add the coming oil rush in Greenland. For sure, it will increase sea traffic in this part of the Arctic. To better understand and witness all these changes, Vagabond will set sail from Brest in about seven months for another long polar stay, supporting the scientific community. To be continued!
